Samsung lagged behind some of its competitors but the Galaxy Nougat release is picking the pace as we push deeper into 2017.
This roundup will walk you through the important details about Samsung’s Galaxy Android Nougat updates and the company’s Galaxy Nougat release for popular devices and mid-range phones and tablets.
Some Galaxy Android Nougat release details are still out of reach but this roundup includes information about the Galaxy S8 Nougat update, Galaxy S7 Nougat update, the Galaxy S6 update, the Galaxy Note 5 update, Galaxy Tab update, and many more.
We’ll continue to update this as we, and others, receive more information about Samsung’s plans for Android Nougat. Check back for regular updates.
Samsung Galaxy Android Nougat Update
Let’s start with what we know about the Android Nougat update itself.
Each Galaxy Nougat update (updates for older devices typically aren’t as robust and carriers typically tack on their own changes) will be a bit different though we expect the core group of features to be the same across the board.

Samsung Galaxy S8 Nougat Update
The Samsung Galaxy S8, the company’s new 2017 flagship, comes with the Android 7.0 Nougat operating system though the Galaxy S8’s version of Android Nougat is different than the software running on Samsung’s older devices.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ have only been out for a short time but they’ve already been issued a new OTA.
A new Nougat update for the Galaxy S8 kills the ability to remap the Bixby button. Bixby is the new voice assistant on board the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+.
AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon have pushed this update out to their versions of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+.
T-Mobile’s new Galaxy S8 Nougat build features performance improvements for Face Recognition and some tweaks to the Camera user interface. And yes, it disables the ability to remap the Bixby button so beware of that.
Verizon’s Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ Nougat builds offer optimizations for the Infinity Display, some changes for Notification badges, and the ability to answer phone calls by pressing the device’s volume up button.
On top of that, Samsung is also planning to bring Google Daydream VR support to its Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ sometime this summer.
A specific release date isn’t known but you can expect support to roll out with a new version of Android Nougat.
Android Nougat problems are plaguing the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ as we push away from launch.
Galaxy S8 problems include weird battery drain, issues with the fingerprint sensor, problems with GPS and Bluetooth, and more.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Nougat Update
Samsung’s official version of Nougat for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge is currently based on Android 7.0, not Android 7.1.1 or Android 7.1.2
As for the size, the Galaxy S7 Android Nougat update is in and around 1.2GB. The exact size should vary based on region and carrier. (AT&T’s Samsung Galaxy S7 Nougat update, for instance, is right around 1.5GB.)
Android 7.0 Nougat on the Samsung Galaxy S7 looks a lot like it does on Google’s devices.
You’ll quickly notice slight changes to the UI’s color scheme. You can get a feel for these changes in the video above.
You’ll also notice some changes to the Galaxy S7/Galaxy S7 Edge camera interface. The changes are similar to those found on the Samsung Galaxy Note 7’s version of Android.

Here are some of the key features:
- App folders are now transparent.
- Samsung Pass: you no longer have to remember passwords.
- Device Maintenance: helps you optimize battery, performance, and security.
- A Device Maintenance panel for the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
- New calendar interface.
- Improved battery usage meter.
- You can now sleep apps to save battery life.
- Video Enhancer tool: improves audio and video quality.
Samsung also highlighted a few features in its Nougat announcement including changes to Quick Panel and Notifications, optimizations for Multi-Window, and Samsung Pass.
Again, these are Galaxy S7 Nougat features and we expect each Nougat update from Samsung to be a little bit different.
One other thing. If you are interested in trying Bixby on your Galaxy S7 you can do so provided you’ve downloaded Nougat.
The resourceful folks on XDA-Developers have released a working version of Bixby for the Samsung Galaxy S7. The Samsung Galaxy S8 launcher is also available for the Galaxy S7.
It’s unclear if these features will officially hit the Galaxy S7 down the road. If they do, don’t be surprised if they arrive with Samsung’s version of Android O.
While Android 7.0 Nougat is treating some Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge owners well, Galaxy S7 Nougat problems are popping up for some users.
Galaxy S7 owners are complaining about Wi-Fi issues, broken Bluetooth, weird battery drain, lag, and more.

One other note about the Galaxy S7 Nougat update: You can now root a Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge running Android 7.0. One draw back? You can’t use Samsung Pay if you root.
Samsung Galaxy S6 Nougat Update
Thanks to the Samsung Galaxy S6 Nougat update roll out we now know what’s officially on board the Android 7.0 Nougat updates for the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S6 Edge+, and the Galaxy S6 Active.
Samsung’s Galaxy S6 Nougat update looks a whole lot like the Galaxy S7 Nougat update. The upgrade, which is around 1.3GB in size, delivers the new user interface the company calls the Samsung Experience. This includes rounded icons and softer colors.
It also includes Samsung Cloud, the company’s cloud storage solution. All users get 15GB of free storage space.
There are, however, some notable features that should be absent. These include the Galaxy S7’s Video Enhancer and Always-On Display. All of them were missing from Samsung’s Galaxy S6 Nougat user manual.
It’s also important to note that Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge users are reporting issues with their versions of Android 7.0 Nougat.
Galaxy S6 Nougat problems are similar to the issues plaguing the Galaxy S7 and include abnormal battery drain, broken Wi-Fi, issues with Bluetooth, and much more.
Samsung Galaxy Note 5 Nougat Update
The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 Nougat update looks similar to the Android 7.0 software that’s been rolled out to the Galaxy S6.
The update’s change log confirms several key features including improvements to Multi-Window mode, UI tweaks, changes for Quick Settings and Notifications, Samsung Pass, and security patches.
The current version of the Galaxy Note 5’s Nougat update is rolling out with Samsung’s latest security patch.

Samsung Galaxy Android Nougat Release Date
Samsung’s Android Nougat update is rolling out for select devices though it will expand to a number of popular smartphones and tablets before the end of the year.
Here’s a look at everything we know about the Samsung Galaxy Android Nougat release date for flagship and mid-range devices starting with the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge.
Samsung Galaxy S7 Nougat Release
Here are a few things we know about the Samsung Galaxy Nougat S7 release date:
- The Samsung Galaxy S7 Nougat update is rolling out to select users in Korea, China and the United Kingdom, the same regions where Samsung released its Nougat beta.
- The Nougat update is now available in Malaysia and France. It’s also rolling out in the UAE, Russia, India, Sweden, Taiwan, Netherlands, Belgium, Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines, Baltic states in Europe, and Germany.
- It’s rolling out to both devices in Canada. Carriers include Rogers, Telus, Bell, Saskatel, and Virgin.
- T-Mobile USA is rolling out the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge Android Nougat updates.
- AT&T is rolling out the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge Android 7.0 Nougat updates.
- Sprint is rolling out its versions of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge Nougat updates.
- U.S. Cellular is finally rolling out its Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge Android Nougat updates. The updates mirror the other releases in the United States.
- The Nougat update for the unlocked Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge is rolling out after a lengthy delay.
- The unlocked Galaxy S7 Nougat update is also pushing out for users inside the United States. It’s available Over-the-Air right now.
In an announcement made to Android 7.0 Nougat beta testers, Verizon confirmed its Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge Nougat update releases for 2017. In March, the company made good on its promise.
Verizon becomes the fourth major U.S. carrier to start pushing out the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge Android Nougat updates. The carrier’s outlined the two updates in detail.
As expected, Verizon’s Galaxy S7 Nougat update looks a whole lot like the updates from AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile. Also of note is the fact that the company’s gotten rid of the go90 application, a decision that should delight many Galaxy S7 users.
The Samsung Galaxy S7 Active Android Nougat update is now available. AT&T is rolling out the update to the rugged version of the Galaxy S7 right now. It’s 1.5GB in size.
The Galaxy S7 Active Nougat update delivers Samsung Cloud and Samsung Pass among other features. It also gets rid of the company’s AT&T Address Book.
Other Galaxy smartphone carriers are also chiming in with their own information about the Galaxy Android Nougat release date.
Vodafone Australia completed its Nougat testing and the company rolled out out its first Android Nougat updates several weeks ago.
The two updates deliver new features, security patches, updates for Samsung apps, and other global bug fixes, stability and performance improvements.
Telstra, another Australian carrier, is also rolling out the Android 7.0 Nougat update to its flagship devices.
Optus, another Australian carrier, recently started rolling out its Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge Nougat updates.
The Samsung Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge, Samsung Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 edge, and Samsung Galaxy Note 5 will be first in line to the company’s Android Nougat update.
Samsung’s confirmed plans to release the Android Nougat update for several other devices in the first half of the year. The list includes the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge and S6 edge Plus, Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy Tab A with S Pen, Galaxy Tab S2 (LTE, unlocked), Galaxy A3, and Galaxy A8.
Here’s what we know about all of those Android 7.0 Nougat releases.
Galaxy S6 Nougat Release
Samsung promised a Galaxy S6 Nougat release in the first half of 2017 and the company has made good on its promise.
The Galaxy S6 Android 7.0 Nougat update is rolling out to select Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge users in the United Kingdom and several other markets in Europe including Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Switzerland, and Turkey.
Nougat is also pushing out to users in the Netherlands, for multiple carriers in Canada, and to users in India.
Vodafone Australia is also rolling out its long-awaited Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge Nougat updates. The update’s deliver:
- Android 7 (Nougat) OS upgrade
- Samsung Android Security Updates (Till April 2017)
- Samsung applications update
- Other global bug fixes, stability and performance improvements
The carrier’s also pushed out its Galaxy S6 Edge+ Android Nougat update after a bit of a delay.
The Galaxy S6 Edge+ Nougat update is now available on Bell, Koodo Mobile, Rogers, Sasktel, Telus, Videotron, and Virgin in Canada.
In the United States, Sprint was the first U.S. carrier to push out a Galaxy S6 Edge+ Nougat update and its also the first carrier to push out the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge Nougat updates.
AT&T recently joined Sprint with a Galaxy S6 Edge+ Nougat update of its own. The AT&T Galaxy S6 Edge+ Nougat update can be up to 1.51GB.
AT&T is also rolling out its Galaxy S6 Nougat update to the regular model, the Galaxy S6 Edge, and the Galaxy S6 Active. The AT&T Galaxy S6 Nougat update delivers new features and the latest security patches.
The carrier notes that its stripped AT&T Address Book, MobiTV, and AT&T Live from Android 7.0 Nougat.
Verizon is also rolling out its Galaxy S6 Edge+ Nougat update. The Verizon Galaxy S6 Edge+ Nougat update is (surprise, surprise) similar to the other Nougat upgrades rolling out in the United States and it brings improvements to multitasking, battery management and more.
The carrier is also now rolling out Android 7.0 Nougat to the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. The Verizon Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge updates bring performance enhancements and more to the former flagships.
T-Mobile confirmed Nougat updates for the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus. The T-Mobile Galaxy S6 Edge+ Nougat update should start rolling out soon and the Galaxy S6 Edge Nougat update recently moved into the “T-Mobile Testing” phase.
Look for this trio of Galaxy S6 Nougat updates to roll out in and around the same time.
Some carriers still aren’t talking about Galaxy S6 Nougat and it appears some updates could be several weeks away at least.
Australian carrier Optus is currently testing the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge Nougat updates. The two updates should roll out in May if all goes well in testing.

Galaxy Note 5 Nougat Release
The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 Nougat update is rolling out though the software appears to be limited to a single device in a solitary region.
The Galaxy Note 5 Nougat release is reportedly taking place in Turkey and a few other countries around the world. The update checks in 1.3GB which means its about the same as the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S6 Nougat updates.
In addition to Turkey, the Galaxy Note 5 Nougat update is now reportedly rolling out in Afghanistan, Libya, Iraq, Israel, Iraq, Morocco, Pakistan Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. If you live in one of those regions be on the lookout for an OTA.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 Nougat update is now rolling out in India for the SM-G920G and in South Korea for select users.
It’s also reportedly pushing out to the SM-N208, also known as the dual-SIM version of the Galaxy Note 5. It’s also known as the Galaxy Note 5 Duos.
The Galaxy Note 5 Android Nougat update should also be available in Canada with Bell, Koodo Mobile, Rogers, Sasktel, Telus, Videotron, and Virgin.
If you own a Galaxy Note 5 on one of those carriers you should receive your Android 7.0 Nougat upgrade soon.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 Android Nougat release has also just begun in the United States and it started with Sprint.
The Sprint Galaxy Note 5 Nougat update is now available out and the 1.4GB download is packed with new features and enhancements.
Sprint’s release has been joined by the AT&T Galaxy Note 5 Nougat update and the Verizon Galaxy Note 5 Nougat update.
The AT&T Galaxy Note 5 Android 7.0 update is also 1.4GB and it brings a similar feature-set to the former flagship. AT&T’s version of Nougat also brings Samsung Cloud, Samsung Pass, and the March security patch along with it.
T-Mobile is also now rolling out its version of the Galaxy Note 5 Nougat update. The update should be available via Settings right now.
Elsewhere, Australian carrier Vodafone recently started rolling out its Galaxy Note 5 Nougat update. The carrier’s update delivers these changes to the popular device:
- Android 7.0 (Nougat) OS upgrade
- Samsung Android Security Updates (2017 March)
- Samsung applications update
- Other global bug fixes, stability and performance improvements

Galaxy A5, Galaxy J3, & More
While the focus is still on the Galaxy S7, Galaxy S6 and Galaxy Note 5 Nougat updates, Samsung’s starting to push Android 7.0 Nougat out to other Galaxy-branded devices.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 Nougat update is pushing for the 8-inch and 9.7-inch models in Europe. Specifically, the updates are rolling out to the Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 (SM-T715) in Italy and the Galaxy Tab S2 9.7 (SM-T810) in Germany.
The Galaxy Tab S2 update is also rolling out in the United States. The update is now live for the 8-inch model and the 9.7-inch model. It should be heading out to the AT&T Galaxy Tab S2 in the near future.
Samsung’s also now pushing out the Galaxy Tab A Nougat update to the 10-inch model. It’s pushing to the Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi+LTE variants.

Samsung’s rolling out the Galaxy A5 2016 Nougat update to users in Russia. The update is available Over-the-Air. The update is also rolling out to the Galaxy A5 2016 in India. We expect it to move out to other parts of the world in the near future.
The Galaxy A5 Nougat update brings the UI changes that arrived with Samsung’s other Nougat releases. It also brings Samsung Cloud support, the changes to the camera interface, and the popular Device Maintenance mode.
Australian carrier Optus at one point said it planned to release the Android Nougat for the Samsung Galaxy A5 in January. Those plans changed.
The carrier’s latest update to its Android roadmap doesn’t list a Galaxy A5 Nougat update which means a release could be weeks away.
Samsung Turkey says its planning to roll the Nougat update out to the original Galaxy A5 in late July though the date appears to be a placeholder (July 31st).
Now that the update is moving out, we suspect it could come a lot sooner than that.
Samsung’s also moving Nougat out to the Galaxy A7 (2016) in India. The update is reportedly less than 1GB in size.
The Galaxy A7 Android Nougat update delivers the UI changes, improved Multi-Window, Samsung Pass, and various performance improvements.
The Galaxy A3 Nougat update has shown up in benchmarks which means its currently in testing at Samsung’s labs. The Galaxy A3 (2016) Nougat update also recently gained approval from the Wi-Fi Alliance.
Android Nougat updates for the company’s Galaxy A 2017 series are also in the works. Samsung hasn’t confirmed anything but the updates appear to be in testing behind the scenes. The Galaxy A3 (2017) Nougat update recently showed up in a new GFX benchmark.
The Android Nougat update also appears to be in testing for the Galaxy A8 (2016). The update recently appeared in a GFX benchmark.
The Samsung Galaxy J3 Android Nougat update recently appeared in a Wi-Fi certification, a sign that it’s in development behind the scenes.
Samsung is also reportedly working on Android 7.0 Nougat updates for the Galaxy A9, the Galaxy A9 Pro, and the Galaxy J7 (2017).
Galaxy Note 4 Nougat Update
A Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Nougat update hasn’t been confirmed and the device has been left off various Nougat upgrade schedules. (Samsung Turkey’s, T-Mobile’s, etc).
The Samsung Turkey roadmap, seen in the image here, has been pretty spot on and it doesn’t include a Galaxy Note 4 Nougat update. The roadmap takes us most of the way through the year.
At this point, there’s a very good chance the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 will stay on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.
Galaxy S5 Nougat Update
Same goes for the Samsung Galaxy S5. We simply haven’t heard anything about a Galaxy S5 Nougat update.
It’s safe to assume Samsung will leave the Galaxy S5 (and all of its variants) on the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow operating system.
Android 7.1.1 & Android 7.1.2 Nougat
Google’s Android 7.1 Nougat update is now available for select Nexus devices around the world. It’s packed with new features and bug fixes for lingering Nougat problems.
Oddly enough, the Samsung Galaxy S7 Android Nougat update that’s rolling out right now is based on Android 7.0, not Android 7.1.1.
While Samsung is starting its roll out with Android 7.0, we could see a shift to Android 7.1.1 or Android 7.1.2 down the road.
A recent benchmark for the Galaxy A3 shows Android 7.1.1 Nougat on board. A more recent benchmark shows a Galaxy S7 Edge running Android 7.1.1.
While benchmarks can be faked, it could mean Samsung is prepping a new version of Android Nougat for arrival.
SamMobile’s also discovered that Samsung’s S Health and Game Tuner apps now support Android 7.1 Nougat.
A recent update suggests Game Tuner also supports the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+. The site suspects that the new flagships could be first in line to Android 7.1 though nothing is confirmed.

Samsung May Security Update
Samsung recently confirmed a May security update and it brings a long list of patches for potential exploits.
The May security update is currently rolling out to some Galaxy S6 models and it’s now rolling out to the Galaxy S7 in the Netherlands and India. It’s also pushing out to the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ in India.
In the United States, it’s moving out to devices like the AT&T Galaxy S7 Active, AT&T Galaxy S7, and AT&T Galaxy S7 Edge. Thise updates are just 40MB.

Samsung Galaxy Android O Update
Google recently confirmed Android O for Pixel and Nexus devices. The update is now in the second phase of its beta but we don’t expect Samsung to say much about the new operating system until much later in the year.
The official Android O release date for Pixel devices and select Nexus devices is confirmed for late summer.
We should see some Samsung Galaxy devices get Android O down the road but we wouldn’t expect any betas of updates to be close.
