10 Things to Know About the iPhone 7 iOS 11 Update

10 Things to Know About the iPhone 7 iOS 11 Update

The iPhone 7 iOS 11 update delivers new features to the former flagships though many iPhone 7 users are noticing problems with the new firmware.

Apple’s finally taken its iOS 11 update out of beta and released it to iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus owners around the world. As expected, it’s a huge upgrade for the two devices as it includes numerous changes to the user interface and popular apps like Podcasts.

If you’re an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus user, there’s a lot to like. Older devices miss out on some iOS 11 features but iPhone 7 users get an extremely robust version of Apple’s new operating system.

Unfortunately, the update is also causing problems on the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Early adopters are complaining about UI lag, battery drain, and a strange issue that’s preventing some devices from verifying the iOS 11 update. You can’t predict how iOS 11 will perform on your iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus so you need to be careful.

If you’re coming to iOS 11 from iOS 10.3.3, your download should be around 1.89GB. It’s a sizable download though it should only take you a few minutes to make the transition from iOS 10 to iOS 11 provided you’ve done the proper work ahead of time.

This guide will take you through steps iPhone 7 should take prior to downloading the iOS 11 update. Our iPhone 7 iOS 11 walkthrough will also go over some of the other key things current and prospective iOS 11 users should know including:

iPhone 7 iOS 11 Update: Impressions & Performance

The iPhone 7 iOS 11 update is, again, 1.89GB if you’re coming to iOS 11 from iOS 10.3.3. If you’re installing on an iPhone 7 Plus, you’re probably looking at a 2.05GB download. Your update could be bigger if you skipped older iOS 10 updates.

The download itself shouldn’t take you long to complete, assuming you’re connected to a high-speed Wi-Fi network. It took about five minutes to finish up on the iPhone 7 Plus, less on the iPhone 7.

The installation process took a bit longer. The iOS 11 install took about 10 minutes on both devices and both rebooted themselves twice in the process. If that happens, there’s no need to freakout. It’s part of the process.

We did run into some early installation problems on the iPhone 7 Plus but they dissipated within a few minutes. We were installing during peak hours and you shouldn’t run into any server issues now.

As for their performance, it’s like they’re two totally different devices. Battery life is great on both. We haven’t noticed any abnormal drain yet. Connectivity (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Cellular data) is also stable on both devices. No problems to report there.

iOS 11 on the iPhone 7 is fast and we’ve only noticed a few issues with first and third party applications. A few of our core apps have crashed though most apps feel snappy and stable.

The iPhone 7 Plus experience is a different story. The operating system feels choppy and a bunch of apps including Apple-owned Workflow are acting up. Our iPhone 7 Plus is also dealing with FaceTime issues where the audio frequently cuts out.

Mileage is, of course, going to vary. But as of right now, iOS 11 on the iPhone 7 is outperforming iOS 11 on the iPhone 7 Plus.

If you own one of these devices and you’re feeling leery about upgrading, take your time. iOS 11 isn’t going anywhere and Apple will probably roll out a bug fix update soon.

If you need additional feedback, take a look at our list of reasons to and not to install iOS 11 right now.
